In 1974, a position statement was published with the intent of responding to “some of the questions the resolution will raise” (1974, p. 3), as is further explained in the rationale for the position statement: The members of the Committee realized that the resolution would create controversy and that without a clear explanation of the linguistic and social knowledge on which it rests, many people would find it incomprehensible.
