By Jenkinson L.R., Marchman J.F.

Written with scholars of aerospace or aeronautical engineering firmly in brain, it is a sensible and wide-ranging publication that pulls jointly a few of the theoretical parts of plane layout - constructions, aerodynamics, propulsion, keep watch over and others - and publications the reader in utilizing them in perform. in line with a variety of special real-life airplane layout initiatives, together with army education, advertisement and notion airplane, the skilled united kingdom and US dependent authors current engineering scholars with an important toolkit and connection with aid their very own venture work. All plane tasks are distinctive and it's most unlikely to supply a template for the paintings fascinated about the layout procedure. despite the fact that, with the information of the stairs within the preliminary layout method and of past adventure from related initiatives, scholars could be freer to pay attention to the leading edge and analytical facets in their direction project. The authors convey a special mixture of views and adventure to this article. It displays either British and American educational practices in instructing airplane layout. Lloyd Jenkinson has taught plane layout at either Loughborough and Southampton universities within the united kingdom and Jim Marchman has taught either plane and spacecraft layout at Virginia Tech within the US.

G. ). To speed up the evaluation process, these can be estimated by assuming typical percentage values of MTO , as mentioned above. Such values can be found from existing aircraft mass breakdowns, if available, or from aircraft design textbooks. At the final stages of the conceptual phase an aircraft mass will be selected which is slightly higher than the estimated value of MTO . This higher weight is known as the ‘aircraft design mass’. All the structural and system components will be evaluated using the value for the aircraft design weight as this provides an insurance against weight growth in subsequent stages of the design process.

6 Initial technical report At the end of the baseline evaluation stage you should have a detailed knowledge of an aircraft configuration that will meet the original problem specifications. However, this configuration is unlikely to be ‘optimum’. It is now possible to produce a report which contains a scale drawing of the modified baseline configuration, a detailed mass breakdown, drag and lift assessments for each operational configuration, and engine and aircraft performance predictions for all flight segments.

It would be impossible and wasteful to start designing all of these options so the first task is to systematically reduce the number. First, all the obviously unfeasible and crazy ideas should be discarded but be careful that potentially good ideas are not thrown out with the rubbish. Statements and comments in the aircraft regulations and the problem definition reports will help to filter out uneconomic, weak and ineffective options. The object should be to reduce “chap02” — 2003/3/10 — page 15 — #10 15 16 Aircraft Design Projects the list to a single preferred option but sometimes this is not possible and you may need to take another one or two into the next design stage.
