It was the beginnings of an attempt to understand the silence which had engulfed a nation. The concept was bigger than I had imagined or properly understood. As word spread, the group grew. We met over several months and explored aspects of their situation, using a variety of Theatre of the Oppressed and counselling methods. Some members of the group came out of curiosity, others seized it as an opportunity to be heard. All were suspicious. The more I worked with them, the clearer it became that their current silence was related to a sense of fear.
In all my applied theatre work I try to work with the different sides involved in an issue. To understand the issue and the behaviour involved means listening to the stories from every angle. This is not to take a stance on right or wrong.
The fear of being viewed as a coward was a dominant one which I found necessary to revisit frequently throughout the workshops. Meeting once a week on weekends for four hours over a period of twelve weeks, we worked predominantly with image theatre. Although words were used, it was usually in the form of a group discussion after an activity, or in the sharing of thoughts and feelings about the work. This period of time was necessary to help the men formulate their stories and remember, as well as to nurture an atmosphere of trust.
